Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho thinks his side are equal to the task of playing Arsenal despite losing 2:0 against Arsene Wenger’s men in the Premier League on Sunday.
With a long-range conscientious effort from Granit Xhaka and a header from Danny Welbeck put a stop to the Red Devils’ long unbeaten race in the league and this has caused the Gunners to move forward with two points behind United.
“I’m disappointed with the result, not the performance,” said Mourinho. “I liked individual performances and also collective performances.
“We lost because we didn’t score and we had great chances to score before them. They had luck with that goal.
“I can’t ask anymore from my players who haven’t played a minute for several weeks – Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata were all amazing.
“The team was good, organised, we tried to win, we played to win, we defended well and Arsenal weren’t better than us in my opinion.”
Mourinho added: “It is all on the Europa League. We tried to play for a result today, you can say I made changes, but you cannot say we didn’t try to win the game. Everything for Thursday now.”
On making eight changes to his starting XI, the Mourinho said: “I feared some players couldn’t play for 90 minutes so I felt I had to make changes.
“We need everybody. We have such a small squad at the moment so it is fantastic for Jones, Smalling and Mata to play minutes.”
